Brother and sister Opara began their community development work with the Lehi Compassionate School,a non- profit educational institution they founded in 2004 that offer free basic elementary and vocational education to the less privilaged women and girls in the village.
Heading up the basic education program, the couple respects the village's traditional wild life poaching while simulteanously improving village life in the region through skill acquisition programs, education, rural health programs and women empowerment.Brother and sister Opara rely soley on their family agricultural income to support the school project.
Brother and sister Opara are ofcourse, not alone in the running of the school project as volunteer teachers and skill specialists travel over 15 miles from their respective homes to teach the students and spend close to 8 hours mondays through fridays.
Lehi Compassionate School's free tuition programs have led to a dramatic transformation of the region.Income has increased one hundred fold among the villagers and an average of 48% of the women and girls can now read and write. As a result, poaching, the chief main profession is reduced, illiteracy controlled, and villagers opening small general stores and grinding mills, offering employment to millers, mechanics, tailors and bookkeepers.
Brother and sister Opara's challenge is now to manage the ever growing number of students from the neighboring regions and bolster material support from the international community.
